Sign Up for Flex AlertsAs we approach summer, Pomona Choice Energy encourages customers to prioritize energy conservation to help maintain a stable electricity grid and prevent potential rolling blackouts throughout the season.

“By implementing simple energy efficiency measures, our community can combat the extreme heat and ensure uninterrupted power supply in our city and throughout the state,” said Tim Sandoval, Pomona’s Mayor. “Rising temperatures impose a strain on energy infrastructure and each one of us has the power to minimize risk.”

To help customers make a conscious effort to limit their energy usage during the summer months, Pomona Choice Energy recommends the following tips:

  • Power down and unplug electronic devices and appliances when they are not in use.
  • Turn off lights upon leaving a room.
  • Set thermostats to 78 degrees Fahrenheit when at home and increase the temperature to 85 degrees or turn them off completely when away.
  • Minimize the use of ovens, opting instead for stovetop cooking, microwaves, or outdoor grilling to prevent unnecessary heat buildup indoors.
  • Close blinds to block out heat from the sun.
  • Reduce reliance on dryers by air drying clothes outside.
  • Limit frequent opening and reopening of refrigerators, which consume significant amounts of electricity.
  • Whenever feasible, schedule power-intensive tasks for early mornings or late evenings in commercial settings.

Pomona Choice Energy also encourages customers to sign up for Flex Alerts, which are voluntary calls for energy conservation. These alerts are issued by the California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO), responsible for managing electricity flow across 80% of California. Flex Alerts are activated when energy demand exceeds supply, and in such instances, CAISO may implement temporary, planned power outages to mitigate the risk of widespread blackouts. During a Flex Alert, it is especially crucial to implement energy-saving practices.

Embracing energy-saving best practices not only benefits the environment but also reduces electricity costs while safeguarding our power supply during heat waves.
