Pomona Choice Energy is encouraging residents to adopt smart energy habits and sign up for state Flex Alerts to keep utility bills manageable and support regional grid reliability this summer.
“Taking small steps at home helps residents manage their monthly bills while keeping our shared grid stable during peak heat,” said Julie Carver, environmental programs manager for the City of Pomona. “Participating in Flex Alerts and making simple cooling adjustments protects both our local energy grid and household budgets.”
Residents can register at FlexAlert.org to receive text or email notifications when voluntary power conservation is needed during high-demand periods. At home, setting thermostats to 78 degrees when present and higher when away saves up to 8% on cooling costs.
Shifting the use of heat-generating appliances like ovens, dryers and dishwashers to early morning or late evening hours also helps keep homes cool and reduces energy demand. 4 to 9 p.m. is when energy demand reaches its peak, prices increase and the grid undergoes the most strain: limit energy-intensive appliance use during these peak hours.
Additionally, community members seeking immediate relief on extreme heat days can take advantage of free, air-conditioned cooling centers at the Pomona Public Library, Washington Park Community Center and Palomares Park Community Center.
